Home-built plane crashes in McMinn County, pilot dead

SWEETWATER, Tenn. (AP) - A home-built single engine plane has crashed in McMinn County killing the pilot, who was the sole occupant.

Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane crashed in a cornfield under unknown circumstances at about 3:30 p.m. EST.

The FAA will investigate the crash.

A dispatcher with the McMinn County Sheriff's Department said deputies were still at the scene and unavailable for comment.

The plane is registered to Jerry Roth in Maryville, but it was not immediately clear whether he was piloting the plane.
