Mayor rescues wandering toddler

A 3-year-old is back in his mother's arms after being snatched up from a busy street by Mayor A C Wharton.

Jeremiah McKinnie had a busy day for a 3-year-old. In one day, he almost got run over by a car, met the mayor and rode in a cop car.

Jeremiah's 10-year-old brother was supposed to be watching him but his big brother took off leaving Jeremiah to find his way back home.

He'd already crossed at least one busy street when Mayor Wharton scooped him up just before Jeremiah crossed East Parkway.

"I pointed to that big street down there, I said you see the big street? I said did you cross that big street? He said yeah," explains Wharton.

Mayor Wharton was backing out of his driveway when he stopped, checked his rear-view mirror and saw a little boy all alone on a very busy street.

Mayor Wharton delivered the boy to police, who drove him back home to a very surprised mother.

"I just went in shock. I was like the Mayor, oh, Lord. The Mayor rescued my son, oh, Lord," says Candida McKinnie.

McKinnie is very thankful. "He's a hero today," adds McKinnie.
