Hospital chief says FS needs 100-plus more doctors

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - The chief executive of Sparks Health System says the Fort Smith area could use between 100 and 150 more doctors.'

Sparks chief Ted Woodrell says the region is undersupplied by physicians. He says Sparks itself wants to hire another 30 physicians over the next year an a half.

At St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, director of physician recruitment Kelly Ford says she has a similar view.

Ford says that St. Edward is looking to hire more doctors to serve the 14-county area St. Edward serves.

Woodrell says hospitals across the country are looking to hire more doctors. He says that includes primary care doctors and specialists.
