Ole Miss athlete found shot to death in off-campus apartment

Students and staff are in shock after the murder of an Ole Miss athlete. Rodney Lockhart's body was found in his off campus apartment Saturday morning.

All day people drove by Rodney Lockhart's apartment trying to come to grips with his death.

"But the fact that a scholarship athlete could be murdered near a college campus is alarming," says Sheri Evans.

Oxford police declined to do an on camera interview regarding Lockhart's death. But in a release officers say a friend visited Lockhart's apartment Saturday morning and could not get anyone to come to the door.

The friend entered the apartment and found Lockhart lying on the floor, un-responsive.

The apartment complex, Taylor Pointe, is within walking distance from the Ole Miss Campus.

Neighbors say Lockhart kept to himself. They say his murder has many of the people who live here concerned.

"And the fact the the homicide happened this close to where I live and this close to the university has got to be a shock to many people in this community," Dr. Adrian Wilson.

The 20-year-old was a Junior Psychology major and a member of the University of Mississippi's track team.

Neighbors hope that police will catch whoever shot him.

"So I guess we all need to find out what happened, how it happened. We don't know but the fact that happened is tragic," adds Wilson.

Investigators have not identified any suspects in the case. If you can help call Oxford Police at 662-232-2435.
