MY TURN: The tragedy at the University of Memphis

The people at the University of Memphis should be commended for their ongoing campus safety initiatives and for their response to the campus shooting death of Taylor Bradford.

It is a stunning irony that Bradford attended a meeting on campus safety just minutes before he was killed.

After the shooting, campus officials moved quickly again to study ways to further improve safety. In that regard, they should revisit their decision not to activate the emergency campus alert system.

The “Tiger Text” alert system was not used until six hours after the shooting and only then to tell students that classes were going to be canceled. University officials defended their decision not to use the alert by saying that they had information that the individuals who shot Bradford had left the campus area.

That is almost precisely the same language that Virginia Tech officials used in describing their choice not to issue an alert after the first two murders that later evolved into a massacre on their campus.

Thousands of U of M students have signed for these text alerts. They need to clearly understand how the University plans to use this capability going forward.

That's my turn...now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
