Health Department: eight new cases of West Nile virus

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Health reported eight new cases of the West Nile virus on Monday.

The new cases were in Adams, Attala, Calhoun, Leflore, Madison, Neshoba, Pontotoc and Rankin counties.

The health agency reports confirmed and suspected cases of the West Nile virus. The state's total number of human cases is 108, with three resulting in death.

Interim State Epidemiologist Mary Currier said although the number of reported West Nile cases is slowing down as cooler weather arrives, mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are still active.

Symptoms of West Nile virus are often mild or flu-like and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.
