Police name mastermind in football player murder

Police say they have the mastermind behind University of Memphis student Taylor Bradford's murder.

They say the former U of M student worked with three suspects to commit the crime.

Devin Jefferson is due to make his first court appearance on first degree murder charges Wednesday, one day after his co-defendants and former high school classmates faced a judge.

On Jefferson's FaceBook page you'll find plenty of pictures that make Devin Jefferson look like a typical college student not an accused murderer.

Kevin Jefferson says his nephew is a good kid, not a killer. He also says he's a hard working young man who went off to college in Indiana to play basketball, but returned to Memphis because he was homesick.

"My nephew didn't do what they say he did," says Kevin Jefferson. Devin ain't no bad person. Devin don't get into nothing," adds Kevin.

Court records show Jefferson got into quite a lot in the year he's been back home; a trespassing charge last November and in June he was questioned in a second degree murder investigation last year, but never charged.

Jefferson's uncle adds, "Just some stuff he just got caught up in then you see he got himself cleared from."

Jefferson also says his nephew had an ongoing feud with Taylor Bradford over a fellow female student.

Memphis Police say it was Jefferson who orchestrated the plot to rob Bradford of a reported $7,000 in casino winnings.

Back on his Facebook page, Devin described his interests as getting money, making money and finding new ways to make money.

It was a quest for cash that may have led to murder. Devin Jefferson's family says they still support and love him and believe in his innocence.
