Grizzlies Fall in Spanish Exhibition Opener

No one expected Training Camp for the New Look Memphis Grizzlies to be easy...even if most of it is being held in a resort city across the Atlantic Ocean in Spain..

No one also expected the Grizzlies to Lose their exhibition game against their gracious hosts.

All of Malaga turned out to see their home town Unicaja team take on an NBA Club featuring Two of Spains' Finest in Veteran Forward Pau Gasol and Summer acquisition Juan Carlos Navarro..

The pair did not disappoint against a Malaga squad that's coming off a Final Four finish in the EuroLeague Championships..

Pau with 18-points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots...

Navarro wowed the crowd off the bench, leading Memphis with 21-points canning 5 of 8 three pointers..to go along with a couple of nifty floaters in the lane..

At one point Navarro hit 5 of 5 from the floor, as the two teams traded big leads.

Like I said, this IS training camp, and the Grizzlies substituted freely..

But the rotation broke down at games' end with New Big Man Darko Milicic on the bench with 5-Fouls, no one was inside to block the boards after Pau had to go out on a shooter..

That left former NBA Journeyman Boniface Ndong open for a Tip that put Malaga in the lead for good with :45 seconds left.

Malaga hands the Grizz an exhibition loss, 102 to 99.

After the game Grizzlies New Coach Marc Iavaroni had these comments.

"We didn't get to loose balls, we didn't hit our free throws... Our defensive rotation is nowhere near what it needs to be right now and that's what did us in. We'll get better.">

The Grizzlies get back to practice Wednesday, then jet to Madrid for another exhibition game against MMT Estudiantes on Thursday.
