Family of murdered football player thanks community

Hours before driving from Nashville for Taylor Bradford's Memorial Service at the University of Memphis, the slain students father talked with Action News 5.

Jimmy Bradford said that his family appreciates all Memphis has done to support his family and he's looking forward to saying thanks to the community.

On the phone Wednesday, Jimmy Bradford shared his feelings about losing his son. He described Taylor as "a guy with a lot of potential but God saw other plans for him."

Jimmy Bradford says the vigils and other tributes to his son this month have helped strengthen his family.

Now, he's hoping that his family's participation in the memorial service will help strengthen the students and bring about a healing.

Bradford said, "And my thing is, ah, that campus has to move on. My son loved the University of Memphis and ah, you know all of the different organizations setting this up tonight. I want them to move on and ah, just remember Taylor and all the Taylor stories and just get back."

As for the men suspected of his son's murder, Bradford would only say that he is grateful to the police and others who's efforts led to their capture.

"Well you know I just, I'm glad they're off the streets. Let me put it like that and I just feel empty," said Bradford.

Bradford said, "I hope my son will be remembered as an outgoing young man, a man who had a plan, a kid with a big smile a big heart, ah, a stranger to no one."

Jimmy Bradford says the best way U of M students can honor his son is to go on and get their degree and do something positive in the community.
