Police investigate Wednesday night shooting

Homicide investigators arrived in the Hickory Hill neighborhood on Kirby Parkway near Raines around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

There, police found a man gunned down in the street, apparently shot in the head.

Neighbors, many of them already in bed, were awakened by gun shots and stood in disbelief watching as police investigated a shooting in their neighborhood.

"I heard two gunshots…boom then boom…then a white Cadillac in front of that truck and it pulled away," said neighbor Cathy Wortham.

The victim, shot in the head, was found lying in the street behind a truck.

Neighbor Lolita Hill says, "This never happens…this is really strange, this never happens. This is really sad because that's somebody's child out there," said neighbor Lolita Hill.

According to Memphis Police Inspector J.M. Willis, an officer in the area heard gunshots and rushed to the scene.

"An officer from the Hickory Hill Station was writing a ticket and he heard some shots," Willis said.  "He came over and found someone has been shot. That's when the investigation started."

Investigators said one or more cars were seen leaving after the shooting. But at this point they don't know who the victim is, if he lives in this neighborhood, or why he was shot.
