Child locked in closet while parents look for work

Children services took two small children after they were left home alone and one of them locked in a closet.

Police were called to an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Ketchum Thursday afternoon.

Police were called out to El Dorado Apartments on Ketchum when a maintaince worker found two small children alone inside an apartment.

The oldest, a 6-year-old boy, was found locked inside a closet. The 3-year-old was watching television.

"We got a call from a maintainence worker from this apartment complex regarding two children left alone in the apartment," says Lt. Tracy Gossett with Memphis Police Department.

Lt. Gossett says the 6-year-old boy was inside a closet. The accordian-like closet was tied together from the outside with a shoe-string.

"The 6-year-old was in the closet with the door tied shut and the 3-year-old was sitting watching TV when we got here," says Gossett.

Lt. Gossett says the boy was not upset or crying when they found him inside the closet. "Yeah, it's possible there might be some child neglect laws at issue here."

The apartment belonged to the aunt of the children.

Moments after the police were called, the father arrived and said that he was out looking for a job and his wife was working late.
