MLGW wants to raise cost to heat your home

You could end up paying more to heat your house this winter. Top management at Memphis Light Gas and Water is proposing a rate increase.

The rate increase proposals are for two services, your natural gas and your water.

While utility officials are proposing a decrease for electric rates, in the end if everything they are talking about is approved, you will be paying more.

The proposal states: MLGW wants to raise natural gas rates by 6.7 percent, there's also a proposed rate increase of fifteen percent for water rates, and management wants to decrease electrical rates by 3.1 percent.

When you add it all up, the proposal would mean a monthly increase of $3.26 a month for the average MLGW customer.

These proposals are not a done deal.

MLGW's board of commissioners will vote on the increase October 18th, then it's up to the Memphis City Council.
