MY TURN: Mayor Herenton's victory speech

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton missed an outstanding opportunity to move forward the agenda of our city and region last week at his election victory party.

It's traditional for these speeches to be carried live on all the local TV stations and this one was. It's a unique opportunity. The city of Memphis only has one mayor and he only gets to give one election night speech.

Not only did Dr. Herenton fail to articulate a message to move Memphis forward, he actually continued the same divisive rhetoric which had characterized his campaign.

My definition of leadership is to show the right way by going first. I certainly hope that Mayor Herenton's election night speech is not representative of the way he plans to address his constituents during his fifth term of office.

As for the rest of us, the Mayor has put us on notice. We've got a problem. Let's roll up our sleeves and see if we can make some progress here with his leadership...or without.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
