Couple robbed in car sale set-up

Just hours before Mayor Herenton held a news conference Thursday morning to say crime was down in Memphis, a repeat offender robbed two Memphians at gunpoint outside a pawn shop, according to police.

Investigators said the suspect used a ruse to lure a couple to a parking lot. They wanted to buy a car, and he wanted their money.

According to Memphis Police Lt. Mickey Williams, the crook robbed a couple in broad daylight around 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot next to Cash American Pawn on South Mendenhall.

A witness who did not want to talk on camera said the suspect said he had a car to sell.  He met the couple, who wanted to buy it, and set up a meeting in the parking lot. When the couple pulled out their money, the man robbed them.

Williams said the suspect got away with $1,500.

Investigators said pictures captured on surveillance video inside Cash America captured images of the man suspected of committing the robbery.  Police say he is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and is missing his bottom teeth.

Williams said the couple did the right thing.

"I don't know how these people could have done to avoid this," he said. "When you are dealing with someone trying to buy a car and not go through a dealer to get a better deal. They met in a well lit public place. That's good."

Police said the suspect drove off in a white Toyota.  It is not clear if that was the car he was trying to sell.
