Human remains discovered in Shelby Forest

Two women in search of clay for a pottery project found made a gruesome discovery Friday afternoon.

Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department were called to Shelby Forest, near Watkins and LockeCuba, after the women discovered what appeared to be human remains near an old boat ramp.

"They were out looking for clay materials that they were going to use for an art project, and as they came down by the river's edge they found what looked to be part of a human skull," said Steve Shular, spokesperson for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators determined the remains were the lower jaw bone of a human.  They could not tell if the bone was from a man or a woman, or how the bone got there.

The remains washed up onto a sand bar surrounded by river traffic and heavy currents.

"The water has receded from that area, so its very hard to tell whether or not the person was in that general area to begin with or whether or not it might have been something picked up from the river," Shular said.

Cadaver dogs searched the area Saturday morning, but found nothing.  Investigators planned to continue to search for clues about the discovery.
