Only on 5: Attorney for Bartlett woman who killed her husband talks

Bobbi Lovell and her husband Alan appear to be a happy couple in family photos. But a history of violence inside their Bartlett home came to a dramatic end last Friday. That's when Bobbi put a bullet in Alan's chest.

"Mrs. Lovell is very, very distraught," says well-known defense attorney Marvin Ballin.

The Ballin firm has taken Lovell's case.

"I would say she is the classic abused wife type of person," says Ballin.

He says documented reports of abuse at the hands of her husband give his client a strong defense. Some are even surprised she was charged in the first place.

"Yes," says long-time domestic violence counselor Carol Hollomon.

She says the terror in Bobbi Lovell's voice on 911 tapes is evidence of the trauma she and her son endured over a period of time and in the hours leading up to the shooting.

"It's an act of desperation, it's an act of self-defense, it's an act of "he's going to kill us!" says Hollomon.

Bartlett Police say they consulted the Shelby County District Attorney's office and the city attorney before charging Lovell with Voluntary Manslaughter. Ballin believes prosecutors may eventually come around.

"We're hoping to get it to where we won't even have the grand jury look at it," says Ballin.

Ballin tells Action News 5 his office is sharing evidence with prosecutors.

Right now, they are offering no comment on the case. Bobbi Lovell is scheduled to be in court at the end of November.
