Police nab pizza place bandit

A dramatic police chase ended with the capture of a pizza place bandit. Action News 5 was there as cops nabbed the crook.

Police are proud of their work on the case. They used the police helecopter and an army of officers. The suspect was caught in a matter of minutes.

"He produced a hand gun and robbed the business," says Lt. Daren Goods with Memphis Police Department.

Employees at the Little Caesars on Summer Avenue told police a gunman walked into the restaurant around 11:00 a.m. and announced a hold up.

"Ah the suspect fled out the back over fences to a neighborhood," says Goods.

An army of police responded after workers called 911. "Responding officer spotted the suspect in the 4000 block of Summer. Ah, attempted to take him into custody," explains Goods.

That officer got into a struggle with the suspect and investigators say he grabbed for that officer's gun.

"They fought over the weapon. Once it came out of the holster the fight continued on the ground and he was able to retreive his own weapon and at that time the suspect got up an continued running," adds Goods.

While the police helicopter and more police units pursued the suspect, officers found a B.B. Gun, a shirt and other items they think the suspect threw out.

Investigators say the suspect continued fleeing but with the help of the air support unit and a lot of police officers they were able to get the suspect into custody.

Officers found the suspect several minutes later hiding in a dumpster.

Major Bill Walsh with MPD says, "It was a team effort. We were at our best."

Police were pleased they apprehended the suspect quickly with no one getting hurt.

Investigators say the officer who struggled with the suspect did get scraped up a bit. He was treated for minor injuries and released early Thursday afternoon.
