Third case of West Nile confirmed in Memphis area

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A third case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Shelby County, bringing the total number of human cases in Tennessee this year to eight.

Last year, there were 14 cases in the Memphis area alone. In the most recent case, the infected person was treated at a hospital and is recovering.

Officials say the threat of infection remains until temperatures fall low enough to kill mosquitoes, which spread the disease.

Although the virus can occasionally cause death, most human infections are mild and result in fever, headache and body aches that last only a few days.
