Tech student arrested on weapons charges

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas Tech University student who was arrested this week after a campus police officer spotted a handgun in his truck told a judge the truck belonged to his grandmother.

25-year-old Jordan Michael Apple was released from police custody after posting bond. If Apple is formally charged, he has a November Fifth court appearance.

While questioning Apple on Wednesday about a reported break-in attempt, campus police say, Apple placed his hand on the gun on the front seat of the truck.

The officer had asked the student to show him his backpack. And Apple said the backpack was in the truck.

The officer told the student to put the gun down and Apple complied and was taken into custody.

Officers searched the truck and also found two loaded and chambered rifles with scopes, a tripod, a box of .410-gauge shells, 14 rounds of other ammunition, a pocket knife and a baggie containing syringes and rolling papers.
