Friends and acquaintances shocked by Manassas shooting

Friends and acquaintances of Markees Smith were shocked to hear the news of his involvement in a shooting Wednesday morning at Manassas High School.

Quiezell Johnson was friends with Smith when the two were neighbors in the same apartment complex in North Memphis.  Smith and his mother moved to Memphis from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

"He was real educated...knew everything that goes on.  He never looked like he would ever do anything like this," Johnson said, adding he was never aware of a time Smith had a gun.

Aqua Lewis broke down in tears as she discussed the shooting.

"If it weren't for me, he wouldn't be here," she said.

Lewis blamed herself because she convinced Smith's Mother, Tanya Williams, to send her son to Manassas High School after moving from New Orleans.

"Her son wouldn't even be going to Manassas if it weren't for me," she said.

Lewis described Smith as a good kid who made good grades.

"He was a computer whiz, you know, he was a triple A student," she said.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and carrying a weapon on school property.

Late Wednesday, he was transferred to the custody of juvenile court.
