Grand jury looking into Memphis school business practices

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The FBI has begun an investigation into the business practices of the Memphis school system.

The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported Wednesday that school officials have been questioned, but the details of the investigation are not known.

The newspaper reported earlier this year that a county commissioner was paid consulting fees by a contractor who was awarded a multimillion-dollar school construction project.

Jim Campbell, president of H&M Company of Jackson, said he has been interviewed by the FBI, but he said the U.S. Attorney's office said his company was not the subject of any inquiry.

Wanda Halbert, a former school board member, said she was subpoenaed by a federal grand jury, but said she is not a target of the investigation.

Halbert said there have been a lot of questionable practices at the school system.
