MY TURN: Free tickets for everybody

We live in a community where many citizens expect their political leaders to be on the take, and the Shelby County Commission has moved to insure that stereotype is perpetuated.

Some of the commissioners were unhappy that their new ethics ordinance would not allow them to accept free basketball tickets to the University of Memphis games, so they just changed the rules.

One of the commissioners defended his action by implying that he needed to go to the games to talk to his constituents about “what’s right and wrong in our community.”

Another commissioner said he gives his tickets to children, "especially little boys who can't afford to go."

Give me a break.

The new ethics ordinance was a step in the right direction. This move to weaken it is a mistake. In most of the country, “Tennessee Waltz” is the name of song and “Main Street Sweeper” is a sanitation worker. For those of us who live here, this is not an academic exercise in ethics.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
