Child dies in apartment fire

Memphis firefighters are investigating an apartment fire that killed a child early Saturday morning.

It's a tragic story that left 25 people homeless one mother without her 4-year-old son.

The fire broke out at the Lake Point Apartments on Winchester Park Drive.

Police and Fire officials are still investigating what caused the fire and whether or not it was an accident or arson.

Latisha Howard was staying in the building Friday night with her 3-year old daughter. She says she believes the fire was started intentionally.

She says there was a fight, police were called, but before police got there the place was in flames.

Howard says she'll never forget what she experienced. "When she's looking for her son everybody's panicking, didn't know where to look. I'm just thanking God we got out but I'm sorry about her loss because that was her only son, 4-years-old and in bed asleep trying to get out," says Howard.

A firefighter was hurt trying to rescue the boy. He was taken to the hospital with second-degree burns on his face.

The manager of the Apartments, Darryl Cook, says that the building did pass code inspection four months ago.
