Hooks to receive presidential honors

WASHINGTON (AP) - Memphis resident Benjamin L. Hooks, the former national executive director of the NAACP, will receive one of eight Presidential Medals of Freedom at a ceremony next week.

The award is the nation's highest civil honor. An announcement of the award from the White House calls the 82-year-old someone who "has dedicated his life to equality, opportunity, and justice."

The civil rights pioneer said he is elated to receive the award.

Hooks is an ordained Baptist minister and a lawyer. He was executive director of the NAACP for 15 years beginning in 1977. He also has been a criminal court judge in Shelby County and a member of the Federal Communications Commission.
