Latest accusations land embattled doctor in jail

A Mid-South doctor charged with sexual battery found himself in more trouble during a hearing Thursday morning.

Dr. Bret Sokoloff is charged with seven counts of sexual battery and two counts of attempted rape.

In a separate accusation, a Collierville massage leveled charges of indecent exposure against the doctor.  It was that accusation that lead to trouble in court Thursday.

Sokoloff arrived in court with his wife by his side.

The hearing began as planned, with a state prosecutor asking Shelby County Criminal Court Judge John Colton to increase Sokoloff's bond, because of the new indecent exposure charge in Collierville.

"He leaves court, and this incident was alleged to have happened on the very same day," the prosecutor said.

In a surprising turn of events, Judge Colton announced he had collected his own evidence for the hearing, producing a copy of the complaint from Collierville.

"I'm going to make this part of the record," he said.

But Colton was not done, as he dropped a bomb.  "The court finds that the defendant is in contempt of this court, and the court will sentence the defendant to ten days in jail, and will be arrested at this time and taken into custody," he said.

As the judge announced Sokoloff's sudden jail sentence, and a $200,000 increase in the doctor's bond, a deputy placed a handcuff around Sokoloff's wrist.  His attorney, Bill Massey, was surprised.

"We received no notice that this was any kind of contempt hearing," Massey said. "I don't think the state knew either."

Massey argued the Collierville incident was just an accusation, not a conviction.

"There's a real question in my mind as to whether Dr. Bret Sokoloff has a big red bulls eye tattooed over his wallet," Massey said.

Massey said it would be interesting to see if lawsuits for monetary damages follow.  He planned on taking the matter up with a court of appeals, and hoped to get Sokoloff out of jail Friday.
