Arkansas residents fight against adult bookstore

City leaders in Forrest City, Arkansas said Thursday they want to stop a racy adult bookstore from expanding, but are running into a hurdle.

As soon as the XXX bookstore opened along I-40 in St. Francis County, residents began fighting to shut it down.

Local pastor Bill Holland formed the group 'Concerned Citizens for Decency and Morality.'

"With this basically in our back yard, we thought if anybody is going to take some action against this, it ought to be us," he said.

Holland was shocked when just a few months ago, the same owners opened a second store just across the interstate.

"It is beyond me why they are so brazen, but I believe the statistics will show that every business like this is brazen and thinks that they're above the law," Holland said.

County Judge Gary Hughes said the first business has been in violation of a St. Francis County ordinance for more than a year.

"That was passed in August of 2005, which requires any sexually oriented business to be licensed," Hughes said.

But owners have not applied for a license for either store.

We went to the store to ask about the violations.  One employee said he could not comment, while another asked us to leave.

Meanwhile, at $500 per day for the past year, the fine for violating the local ordinance keeps growing.
