92-year-old Memphis woman killed in fire

An elderly Memphis woman trying to stay warm Friday night died when her house caught fire.

Fannie Morgan lived on Walnut Road for more than 50 years. Her niece told Action news 5 that Morgan was able to take care of herself and "she was just sweet. We just all loved her."

Morgan died Friday night, trapped inside her home. Neighbors say they heard Morgan's smoke alarm but by the time they reached her house it was too dangerous to try and save her.

Investigators believe the fire began in the living room with a stove Morgan used to keep warm. They say something had been set too close to the stove.

Neighbor Claire Holmes worried Morgan would become a target for criminals. There have been a number of burglaries in the neighborhood lately. "And she stayed by herself," said Holmes, "but I didn't think about a fire."

It's a fire that took Fannie Morgan's life and destroyed everything she owned.
