Robbery suspect killed by police officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A suspected robber killed by Memphis police was identified Wednesday and a man believed to have been his accomplice was arrested, authorities said.

Marvin Carmichael, 29, of Memphis was shot at an apartment complex Monday night by police responding to a robbery call. He died a short time later at the Regional Medical Center.

Marakith Evans, 21, Carmichael's suspected accomplice, was arrested on robbery and evading arrest charges.

The shooting occurred after two victims were robbed at gunpoint at a car wash and then flagged down a police cruiser. The victims gave police a description of the robbers' car and it was spotted at a nearby apartment complex, authorities said.

When police approached the car, which was occupied by two men, one fled and the other fired a handgun at the officers, investigators said.

Officer Corey Hentz, a seven-year police veteran, returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman, police said. Hentz was on paid leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
