Suspect in deadly hit-and-run awaits return to Tennessee

54-year-old William Yarbrough said in a Haywood County, North Carolina jail cell Monday, charged as fugitive from justice.

Investigators claim Yarbrough struck and killed Dillan Cole with his van Thursday night in Tipton County.  Cole was riding his bike at the time.Yarbrough and his dark green minivan were discovered just over a day later in Haywood County, North Carolina.

When he is returned to Tennessee, Yarbrough will face at least three separate charges, including leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, driving with a suspended license, and destroying evidence.

Sunday, Yarbrough's wife Linda spoke to Action News 5.

"I just want then to know that we're terribly sorry, and that my husband would never hurt anybody," she said, adding that striking Cole was purely an accident.

DeDe Jones, who lives in the same house as the Cole family, said she does not understand why Yarbrough fled after hitting Cole.

"That's the main question right there," she said. "Why didn't he stop?"

Jones' son, Cody, was riding his bike alongside Cole at the time of the hit-and-run.

"I'm happy they caught him," he said.

Officials said Yarbrough could be extradited to Tipton County as early as Tuesday.
