Driver slams into gas pump at Memphis Mapco

Investigators say an SUV lost control at Jackson and Bellevue, crashed over an embankment and slammed into a gas pump erupting in flames.

Firefighters said the SUV struck a pump at the Mapco at North Bellevue and Jackson just after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The pump and the vehicle were quickly engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames with foam, leaving the charred skeletons of the pump and the SUV behind.

The driver of the SUV ran several blocks away immediately after the accident. That person was eventually treated for minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Officials have not yet said what caused the driver to lose control of the SUV. "It appears to me that this was an accident maybe a citation or something like that from police I think that's all we're looking at right now," says Memphis fire chief Derek Brassel.

He says they're lucky no one was seriously hurt.
