Student arrested for leaving threatening note at DeSoto Central High School

A 16-year-old student was arrested Friday in connection to a threatening note that was found late Thursday afternoon at DeSoto Central High School in Southaven.

An assistant principal found the note on her door Thursday afternoon. Along with a bomb threat, specific students were also mentioned in the note.

Parents of the students mentioned in the note were contacted, so that police could make them aware of the situation.

Investigators searched the DeSoto Central High School with police dogs, but found no sign of a threat. Though they were not specifically mentioned in the note, the elementary and middle schools were also checked.

"With these things that's happened in the past, you have to take everything serious now," said Southaven Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Pirtle.  "Better on the safe side than the sorry side.  So I guess we have to be very aggressive in the way we handle these matters, and the investigation."

Pirtle said extra officers were on hand Friday morning at DeSoto Central High as a precaution.  No problems were reported.

Investigators belive the student that was arrested Friday was working alone, and no one else was involved.

In September, a 15-year-old student at Hernando High School, also part of the DeSoto County School District, wrote a similar threatening note. That student was arrested and charged with simple assault.
