Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor speaks in Memphis

A man with a face familiar to millions of television viewers spoke in Memphis Friday.

In the three years since he turned over the NBC Nightly News anchor chair to Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw has watched as You-Tube, My Space and Facebook have transformed politics.

"Last night's debate on CNN is already on YouTube and Facebook, and they're picking out the parts they think will titillate people," Brokaw said. "So I guess I have mixed feelings about it. I suppose in the final analysis it is better because the citizens have more access."

While Hilary Clinton and Rudy Giulianni now lead the polls in the race for the White House, Brokaw predicts the unforeseen may occur:

"All that could change January 3rd in Iowa," he said. "If somebody comes from the back of the pack...Governor Huckabee from Arkansas, and wins on the Republican side, that accelerates him to the top of the heap and the country begins to pay attention to it."

Brokaw, also an accomplished author, was in Memphis to talk about his latest book, "Boom," a reflection on the revolutionary 1960s:

"It was a very, very difficult time, and I wanted to go back and talk to the people who were there and get their reflections now," he said. "Andy Young at the Lorraine Motel...he said something fascinating to me. 'We didn't have time to grieve; we had work to do; we had to get back to the Poor People's Campaign.'"

Brokaw spoke at a Peabody hotel luncheon benefiting Methodist Healthcare Foundation.

He said not to be surprised if he shows up in the Grove Saturday at the game between Ole Miss and LSU.
