Millington Police seize more than 50 pounds of weed

Millington Police have arrested man after finding more than 50 pounds of marijuana in his home.

Officials said the Millington Police Department's narcotics received a tip that a large cache of marijuana was being stored and sold at the home of Gerardo Mendoza.

During a raid, 52 pounds of marijuana were taken from Mendoza's home.  A large stash, divided up in into 43 plastic bags, was found in a garbage bag in Mendoza's garage.  A police dog found more marijuana in a dresser drawer in one of the home's bedrooms.

Though Mendoza showed officers identification papers, the soon learned he was not a U.S. citizen.

Millington Police Inspector Charlie Coleman said the Immigration and Naturalization Service is reviewing the case.

"We've contacted INS," he said.  "They'll do their part.  Right now, he's incarcerated at 201 Poplar."

Millington Police Chief Rick Jewell said the bust was part of a concerted effort to eliminate drugs in his city.

"I've always said one of my top priorities is drug enforcement," he said. "We've had a lot of drug stings out here, and arrested a lot of dope dealers, and they're still dealing dope, and we're still going to get after them."

Police also confiscated a shotgun Mendoza had in his pickup.  He was is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, deliver, and sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Officials said those do not include charges he could face from the INS.
