FBI interviews Memphis City Council member

Action News 5 has learned FBI agents paid a visit Monday afternoon to Memphis City Hall.

Memphis City Council member Myron Lowery said he was questioned in his office at City Hall about Joseph Lee and Edmund Ford.

Lowery said he was told by the agents he was not the focus of their investigation.

The councilman, who did not want to appear on camera, said the agent's questioning centered around MLGW.  Lowery said the agent wanted to know if either of the men asked Lowrey for his support on different matters.

According to Lowery, the agent also said he was not looking for violations of open meetings laws.

A federal grand jury indicted Lee and Ford several months ago.  Lee is accused of giving Ford preferential treatment, including allowing Ford to run up a $16,000 utility bill, in exchange for political favors.

Lowery said he believed the FBI agent was trying to tie up any loose ends in the bureau's investigation.  A second council member, who wished to remain unnamed, also believed the FBI's questioning was an attempt to shore up it's case.

Officials at the FBI had no comment.
