Postal employee accused of attempted kidnapping appears in court

A postal employee of 29 years appeared in court Monday on attempted kidnapping charges.

Judge Karen Massey set a hefty bond for the James Hodges, who is accused of attempting to abduct a Cordova girl last week.  Hodges appeared dazed during his hearing as Massey scheduled a second court date for next Monday.

Court documents revealed a clearer picture of how the 15-year-old Cordova girl was almost abducted right around the block from her home, and how police tracked down their suspect.

The affidavit says Hodges approached the teen in the parking lot of a Walgreen's on Macon Road last Monday.

According to the affidavit, when Hodges told the girl to come to him, she resisted.  It alleges Hodges then grabbed her, punched her, and tore her shirt as she tried to get away.

The girl was able to escape after hitting him in the face with her cell phone.

Hodges was taken into custody Thursday when he approached an officer patrolling that same parking lot.  Hodges told the officer he had received an unusual call from the Sex Crimes Bureau.  Then tried to get back into his car, but the officer took him into custody.

Investigators said crack cocaine and a glass crack pipe were found in Hodges car.

The 15-year-old girl told investigators she had never met Hodges before.

Hodges faces charges of attempted kidnapping, as well as charges for possession of crack cocaine and related paraphernalia.
