Shelby County commissions support change in "sunshine law"

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shelby County's commissioners want to be able to discuss more public business in private.

The Commission yesterday voted unanimously to support a revision in Tennessee Open Meetings Act what would allow members of local governing bodies to discuss public business behind closed doors, as long as there wasn't a quorum present.

A quorum is the number of members needed to transact business.

As the so-called "sunshine law" now reads, two or more members are barred from "deciding or deliberating toward a decision" outside of a public meeting.

Various local governments have passed resolutions, some in favor of the proposed change and others opposing it.
