Utility rate increases coming for MLGW customers

As cold temperatures begin to blow into Memphis, utility rates are getting ready to go up.

Tuesday night, the Memphis City Council approved a rate increase for the gas and water portions of customers' monthly utility bills.

The increase will affect more than 350,000 MLGW customers.  Company officials said the average customer will end up paying approximately $3.26 more monthly on their utility bill.

Officials at MLGW said they understand even a slight increase will burden some customers, but that the increase is an attempt to balance reliable service with increasing reliability costs.

"We plan on maintaining our strong bond rating, and we need to make a rate increase to keep that strong bond rating, so we can borrow money at the lowest possible interest rates," MLGW President Jerry Collins said.

Collins added that customer impact is always considered when a decision is made to change rates.  He said he hoped to make the increase last as long as possible.

Customers that need assistance with their utility bills can contact MIFA for help.

The rate increase for gas and water comes at the same time as a slight decrease for electricity.  Officials said the energy decrease would be offset by the gas and water increases.
