Military family spends happy Thanksgiving together

As Linda Ashton cooked her family's Thanksgiving meal Thursday, she was happy to have her husband there to help her.  It was a far cry from how she spent Thanksgiving one year ago.

"It means everything to me," she said.  "To our children...our grandchildren."

Last year, Linda husband, Staff Sergeant Roy Ashton, spent Thanksgiving in Iraq.  He and others in his Army National Guard unit tried to make the best of the situation, but Roy said he was thankful to be back with his family.

"It means the world to me," he said.  "There's no place like home."

Now, there's plenty of catching up to do as Ashton and his wife settle back into their old routines.  Linda Ashton said she spent endless hours praying her husband would return from Iraq safely.

"We're partners in life, and my life partner was gone, and so I just really missed him in life," she said.

Now that he is back, the couple can focus on loving each other.  Roy Ashton said that was much better than focusing on fighting a war.

"You bet!" he said.

And as the Ashtons spent Thanksgiving together, they took time to remember the soldiers still fighting in Iraq, saying those soldiers need prayers, along with the families of soldiers who sacrificed their lives.
