Cyber Monday: What is it?

Cyber Monday is a day when shoppers can stay home and find extra holiday savings online! Cyber Monday is a day when shoppers can stay home and find extra holiday savings online!

The term Cyber Monday refers to the Monday immediately following Black Friday, the kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the United States.

Whereas Black Friday is associated with traditional brick-and-mortar stores, "Cyber Monday" is associated with a busy day for online retailers, following the idea that consumers return to their offices after the Black Friday weekend, making purchases online that they were not able to make in stores.

Where did the name Cyber Monday come from?  Originally, it was created in 2005 by Shop.org, a website that operates as part of the National Retail Federation.  Since then, it has become a sort of online buzzword that is used for advertising purposes by many online retailers.

Is Cyber Monday the busiest shopping day of the year?  It depends on who you ask.  According to a New York Times article, the busiest shopping day of the year in 2005, the year the phrase Cyber Monday was coined, was actually December 12th.

Nevertheless, Cyber Monday is a day when online retailers offer additional savings for holiday shoppers.
