Residents take back neighborhood with prayer party

What does it take to take back your neighborhood from criminals? It starts with determination and believing in yourself. One Mid-South community is asking a higher power for help.

The folks living in the Binghampton area are praying.

Every Monday the staff and others at the Neighborhood School in Binghampton get together and pray for the community.

Over the years its become an important way they can take back their neighborhood.

Every Monday from 3:30 to 4:30, the doorway at the Neighborhood school becomes a prayer party.

Officials at the non-profit christian school admit the prayer circle is small but residents say the group's prayers have done big things in the Binghampton area.

16-year-old Derrick Thomas is well aware of the need for prayer in Binghamton. Last year he was playing in a park just down from the school when a friend, Melissa Robinson, was shot during an argument with a group of girls.

"I feel bad because that was a part taken out of me too 'cause that was like one of my friends," says Thomas.

For the past 14 years, the neighborhood school has been giving back by providing a christian education for hundreds of youngsters in the area.

"This is taking back the neighborhood. We believe by reaching children from 4-years-old and up that they can live a different life from ones that so many people in the neighborhood live," says one volunteer.

And the neighborhood school is already making plans to do more in the neighborhood.

Next year, the non profit school will open dormitories and provide on campus housing for nearly 30 students.
