Forrest City man gets 10-year sentence for killing child

FORREST CITY, Ark. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Forrest City man to 10 years in prison for beating a child to death with an electrical cord.

Thirty-two-year-old Cornelius Dawson was arrested on a capital murder charge in January for the death of four-year-old Lamont Hurd. Dawson's girlfriend, 24-year-old Roberta L. Johnson called an ambulance to their home after Lamont stopped breathing.

Police found what they described as healing cuts on across the toddler's head, neck, chest, arms, back, buttocks and legs after he was rushed to the Forrest City Medical Center. Lamont later died at the hospital.

Dawson, who initially faced a capital murder charge, pleaded guilty yesterday to a manslaughter charge. Prosecutors did not return telephone calls seeking comment today.

Police say Johnson later told investigators she and Dawson whipped the toddler after he wet the bed and lied about it. Police say Johnson told them she even held the child down at one point.

Johnson told investigators Dawson later threw the boy against a chair, causing a seizure.
