School board members claim documents requested by the FBI are missing

The sign outside the central office warns of tight security inside.  But some things may be slipping through the cracks upstairs.

"And I think the district owes it to the public to explain why," says MCS Commissioner Wanda Halbert.

School board members claim documents requested by the FBI are missing and nowhere to be found.

"I know some requests have been made and they haven't been able to fulfill all of the requests," says Halbert.

A federal grand jury is investigating school construction bidding practices.  It has already indicted former Shelby County Commissioner Bruce Thompson.  School board members, including Halbert, have been called to testify.  She hopes there hasn't been a deliberate attempt to hide information.

"Anytime something disappears, that's a red flag something is absolutely wrong," says Halbert.

"This is one of those things where, if there's any wrongdoing, all of us as citizens want to get to the bottom of it," says MCS Commissioner Dr. Jeff Warren.

The interim superintendent says the district is trying its best to meet every request made by the feds.

"You know, I've just given instructions to staff that whatever's requested, the open records law requires us to produce it," says Dan Ward.

That's if you can find it.  Halbert is afraid some of the documents may be gone for good.

"I might need to call someone in the former administration and ask them," she says.

Our calls to former superintendent Carol Johnson have gone unreturned.  She's now running public schools in Boston.  The former chief operations officer followed her there.
