Amtrak train collides with freight train in Chicago; 5 people critically injured

CHICAGO (AP) - Officials say at least 14 people have been seriously hurt in a train collision in Chicago.

An Amtrak train with 187 passengers plowed into the back of a freight train. Authorities say passengers were hurled into the seats in front of them and that four people had to be pulled from the front of the train, where the engine was located. That's where most of the damage occurred.

The fire commissioner says five people are in critical condition, nine are in serious condition, and about 30 others have been treated for bumps and bruises.

No word on what caused the wreck.

The Amtrak train was en route from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Chicago.

The National Transportation Safety Board has sent investigators. A police superintendent says the accident was caught on tape by a camera on a nearby post.
