UPDATED: Malfunction at Memphis refinery causes fireball, smoke

A system malfunction early Friday evening at the Valero refinery in Memphis sent large flames and large plume of smoke into the evening sky.

Smoke from the flames, which shot from one of the smoke stacks at Valero's refinery, could be seen from miles away.  Witnesses from as far away as Southaven, Mississippi could see the smoke as it rose into the air.

Images submitted by Action News 5 viewers (displayed above this story) show just how high the flames shot.

Valero spokesperson Lisa Wheeler said the large flames, called a "control burn," were being monitored from the ground.

Wheeler said the public was not in any danger.

People who live near the facility, or anyone else wanting information, can call Valero's community information line at 901-942-6608.
