YOUR TURN: Jeri Ann Smith's complaint about our coverage of a McDonald's assault

In my job as the manager of a television station, I'm accustomed to receiving all sorts of unusual complaints, but this one does represent a new milestone.

This week's "Your Turn" segment goes to Jeri Anna Smith, vice president of the Transgender Education Foundation. Smith is upset about our coverage of the recent assault at a local McDonald's restaurant.

A restaurant employee described the attackers as "drag queens," and Smith says she is offended by that. In her words:

"The behavior described in the crime is totally out of character for a true Transgender individual.  The entire Transgender Community has been slandered in this news report.  The Transgender folk worldwide are peaceful hardworking, individuals.  My recommendation is that McDonald's Corporation initiate some sensitivity training quickly in the matters of Transgender awareness.  And perhaps your news network might be interested in some education itself so that your reporting can be as accurate as you advertise that it is."

That's Jeri Anna Smith's turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
