UPDATED: Off-duty fire department employee in stable condition after shooting

An off-duty Memphis fire department employee was shot Monday afternoon inside a North Memphis business.

The shooting happened at about 3:45 p.m. at a laundromat in the 2600 block of Chelsea.

Investigators said Willie Burnett, Junior was shot in the torso and leg when someone came into the facility. Witnesses said the suspect fired multiple shots at the Burnett during an argument both inside and outside the laundromat.

A co-worker said after Burnett was shot, he tried to keep his fallen friend coherent until paramedics arrived.

"I ran up, grabbed his shoulders and head, and raised my knees up under him," the co-worker said.

But it didn't look good.

"He was shot right here," the co-worker said, motioning. "It came through his leg, and he was shot right back here."

Burnett was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis in critical condition.  His condition was later upgraded to stable.

Co-workers said Burnett was a part time employee at the driving service, whose main responsibility was driving a truck.

Police have no one in custody but said they have a suspect they are looking for.
