800 students skip school after hoax prompts fear of gang attack

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (AP) - Almost 800 students skipped school in Ooltewah Monday after a student used the Internet to post a false rumor that a gang was planning an attack.

Ooltewah High School administrators say the claims were false and there was no threat, but that didn't stop a big percentage of the school's 2,000 students from staying away Monday.

Rhonda Thurman, a Hamilton County Board of Education member, said there was not much administrators could do if parents refused to send their children to school.

School administrators have found the student responsible for the hoax and that student has been suspended. Schools spokeswoman Danielle Clark says the student admitted the claims were false.
