Attorney says Memphis surgeon accused of attempted rape is depressed

The attorney for a Mid-South surgeon whose nurses accused him of sexual battery and attempted rape says his client is depressed and getting counseling.

Tuesday, a judge set a May trial date for Dr. Brett Sokoloff.

Sokoloff is charged with seven counts of sexual battery and two counts of attempted rape in alleged assaults against three nurses over a two year period at the Midtown Surgery Center.

A  judge previously ordered Sokoloff to seek counseling   Sokoloff's attorney, Bill Massey, said his client sought out help long before he was ordered to.

"His career is in jeopardy," Massey said. "His family is strained. His freedom is threatened. So he naturally is depressed."

Sokoloff claims he is not guilty of the charges against him.  While out on bond for the original charges against him, a massage theripast claimed the doctor exposed himself to her.
