Effort to push flock away kills about 100 birds

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Officials say about 100 birds have died at the Little Rock National Airport after eating corn treated with a chemical designed to agitate the flock into leaving.

Spokesman Philip Launius says the airport often used cannons and loud noises to spook birds away from its runways. However, after a plane hit 12 birds at the airport, airport officials decided to use the corn to get rid of the birds.

Launius says contractors told the airport some birds likely would die, as many in the flock were already diseased. He says the chemical in the corn was designed to make the birds sound distress calls and go somewhere they can be more comfortable.

At the flock's height, Launius said about 500 birds nested near the airport's runways.
