Crews battle two-alarm fire on President's Island

Fire broke out Thursday morning at Railworks Wood Products on President's Island.

Firefighters rushed to the scene of the two alarm fire after it started around 10:00 a.m. Thursday. While the fire was brought under control about a half hour later, white plumes seemed to surround the wood processing plant for hours.

While it looked like smoke, it was actually steam from asphalt at the plant.

"The fire started in a fixed storage facility," said Memphis Fire Department Lt. Keith Staples. "It got caught up in one of the valves and the product began to leak."

Firefighters spent the day out at the plant, dousing it with water to make sure hot spots didn't ignite again

There were no injuries.  Investigators are working to figure out exactly what started the fire.

Staples said firefighters didn't find any evidence that the business was doing anything wrong in terms of fire safety.

According to the company's website, "RailWorks Wood Products is a major supplier of treated hardwood crossties and switch ties to the Union Pacific, North American's largest railroad..."
